Organization Name: The Salvation Army
Title of Project: Warming Center
Amount of Grant Awarded: $70,000
Organization Website: https://lewiston.salvationarmy.org/lewiston_corps/
Impact of Grant: Many people who would have otherwise had no immediate housing options were served by the funded work. The Warming Center frequently reached its bed capacity and had to find new ways to safely and creatively serve higher numbers. For basic needs, the service counts run directly by the Salvation Army show more than 900 clients helped through the grant timeline, including those receiving short-term shelter, food, personal hygiene items, and more. The number is even higher with the exact count from the ARC. There were at least 1,000 instances of related assistance, and the impact of this on every individual cannot be overstated. The positive outcomes in the community are evident when families and individuals have a place to go during crisis, a place to plan for the future and connect to others, and a place to get needs met without stigma or discrimination. This help changes the whole community when individuals have encouragement to get what they need and when the network of resources is made navigable. Furthermore, with the provision of meals, snacks, and emergency food, everyone’s future is benefited when kids don’t go hungry, avoiding proven harm to physical and mental health at key development stages.
